Holmenkollen skijump - and a huge recreation area

Oslo Norway

Oslo is the capital city of Norway with many restaurants, good nightlife and facilities plus top attractions in and around the city. The Oslo region has very good travel links with Europe and the rest of the world and is a good place to start exploring southern and eastern Norway, plus the museums and parks of Oslo itself.
It is about 2 hours flight time from London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris, less than that from Copenhagen, Stockholm and other places in Scandinavia.

Attractions

There are many good museums in and around Oslo, and the Oslo card for museum entrance plus transport is a good deal.
In the centre is Karl Johans gate, with the Kings house at one end and storting - the parliament - at the other. Akerbrygget is a modern area of shops, restaurants, bars, offices and apartments down beside the fjord.
Take a boat to Bygdøy where the Kon Tiki, Fram, Viking ships, and Norwegian Folk museums can be found.
Visit Frogner park for the Vigeland sculpture park, a remarkable and unique view of people in all stages of life, from angry babies, to old men - all very true to life. The nearby Vigeland museum contains much of the same, but includes a larger than life-size woman in marble - so life-like she could move at any moment.
The Munch Museum is also a popular destination.
Take a tram to Holmenkollen skijump, or onwards to Frognerseteren which is the end of the line. In this area are woodlands and many paths to follow, summer and winter. During good snow conditions in the winter you can rent skis here and get far away from city sights and sounds, or bring a sledge here - there is a fantastic sledge run that brings you down the hill to another tram stop - so take the tram back up to the top of the hill!

Festivals and Events

Oslo has many festivals and special events each year.
