Bergen Norway
Bergen is the second city of Norway (after Oslo) with many restaurants, good nightlife and facilities plus top attractions in and around the city. The Bergen region has good travel links with Europe and is a good place to start exploring west Norway and the fjords.It is around 1 - 2 hours flight time from London, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and other destinations. The Newcastle ferry used to take around 1 day to Bergen (via Stavanger) but the service ended in 2008 and will not start again until at least 2014. Fjordline still has a ferry to Hirtshals Denmark.
Bergen is the southern terminus of Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyage and a ship leaves here every day of the year to Trondheim, Tromsø and Kirkenes and back, taking 11 days.
Attractions
Just within Bergen town there are many sightseeing opportunities - walk around the harbour, take the boat to the aquarium and stroll around Nordnes.Check out the fish, vegetables and flowers at the markets at the end of the harbour, or stroll through the restored buildings of the Bryggen area - a UNESCO world heritage site.
Stroll to the bottom of the Fløybanen - the funicular railway - and take a trip up the mountain. The views from the top are wonderful, and if you want you can walk further, in the woodland, with lakes. In years gone by this area was often ski-able as evening or weekend exercise, but not so often now, unfortunately.
You can also take to cable-car up mount Ulriken.
